About Gene Family

A gene family, such as the bZIP family, is a set of similar genes that originate from the duplication of a single original gene and share similar biochemical functions with one another. Since sequence compositions basically determine their functions, genes are categorized into families according to shared nucleotide or protein sequences. If the genes of a gene family encode proteins, the term protein family is often used in an analogous manner to gene family.

About Method

GraP uses Pfam search and HMM scan with the model from related public databases to find gene families at a genome-wide scale. The prediction comprises five categories, including transcription factors and regulators, UPS, cytochrome P450s, protein kinases and phosphatases. Additionally, GraP carries out an InterProScan against all protein sequences to support all the classifications.
